How to handle fresh fruits and vegetables

Health eating habits don’t just include the consumption of a balanced diet. It also involves ensuring food safety. When talking about food handling, more emphasis is paid to meat and other animal-based products due to their highly vulnerable perishable properties. However, fruits and vegetables can too, put your health in jeopardy if not handled the right way.

Here are some tips to handle fruits and vegetables safely and healthily:

  • While buying, make sure that you check the fruits and vegetables for damage. This can help prevent the risk of purchasing infected groceries.
  • When purchasing frozen and pre-cut fruits and vegetables, make sure that the packaging is intact and not at all compromised.
  • Store your fruits and vegetables away from your raw meat, seafood, and other animal-based products.
  • Before consuming fruits and vegetables, wash them well.
  • Before handling your groceries, chopping, or peeling them, wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap to clean them well.

Other methods of safe handling include cooking the food well before intake, storing the leftovers in clean containers and at the right temperature, and disposing off of the peels and waste the right way.
